Bas Aircraft - Our mission is to develop a complex aviation science program and equipment and provide global capabilities that deliver environmental science to a wide variety of airports. The fleet consists of five specially designed aircraft (de Havilland Canada Dash 7 and four Twin Otters).
At the beginning of each season the aircraft - eight pilots and four engineers - fly the plane south from their E in the northern part of the world. Flying in Antarctica takes place during the Antarctic summer between October and March, as the winter darkness and high temperatures prevent flying at other times.

British Antarctic Survey Seeks Small Passenger Aircraft For Antarctica
With a budget of 5.5M, tenders are invited from suppliers who can provide a complete aircraft with all the requirements to meet its specifications, or suppliers who are able to be modified by others for the requirements. They can provide flights. . The aircraft will carry at least 550 kilograms of passengers and cargo, and will fly 923 kilometers (nm) from Punta Arenas to the Rothera Research Station, landing at a runway of 876 meters.
Rothera Station is a hub that supports the ship's capacity. Its runway supports a fleet of five aircraft, which are mainly connected to aircraft in the harsh Antarctic climate. Four de Havilland Canada Twin Otters and a de Havilland Canada Dash-7, each equipped with a conversion kit to carry out space exploration.

Standard equipment includes standard temperature and wind sensors and a pressure sensor that provides accurate measurements of air, temperature, humidity and wind. The turbulence is fast and easy to measure and the temperature is easily measured using the eddy co-variance method. This range of measurement capabilities is complemented by an in- and out-of-radiation device with an infra-red trometer.
The Twin Otter aircraft is equipped with a wide range of instruments suitable for atmospheric, boundary and cloud/aerosol studies. This aircraft is a very compact platform that is used around the world as a 'bush' aircraft. Its turbo-prop engine and 'short take-off and landing' (STOL) capability can be used from small, isolated unpaved airfields, and the combination of ski or tundra tires allows it to operate on snow and in remote campsites. i

The aircraft can be operated by one pilot and a long fuel tank is also available. Two cargo doors provide convenient storage.

Normally, ships operate in Antarctica from October to March every year. The first Arctic project took place in February 2013 with the support of the NERC ACCACIA consortium launched in Svalbard.
Openings on the ground floor can also accommodate fixed lasers for searching or scanning lasers used to measure rainfall patterns. Adequate GPS measurements and feedback are available to support this. Video cameras and SLR systems can also be installed here. The camera lens can also be set to release emissions into the atmosphere.
Strong points and pylons are available on each wing. The DMT Cloud and Aerosol Spectrometer (CAPS) is used for cloud research. Other standard PMS tools can be easily modified. We also operate a closed loop Licor H2O/CO2 instrument, Grimm optical grimm counters and nuclear counters fed from a simple Rosemount but we are in the process of fitting a Bractal isokinetic inlet. Inlets provide access to other aerosol components.
