We set our sights on some alluring trinkets that are black, iron and oil and pursue him relentlessly until he is in that holy place in gun safe. The trend among gun collectors is as widespread as fashion or classic cars.
The rare Springfield Armory SA1 is a semi-automatic version of the M60 belt-fed 7.62x51mm NATO pistol.

However, there is one gun, in particular, that will serve as the most important part of any gun collection. This is a rare and no longer produced Springfield Armory SA1, a semi-automatic version of the M60 GPMG (General Purpose Machine Gun).

The SA1 is a semi-automatic production version of the M60 rifle that was manufactured directly after the 1986 "machine gun ban". Using GI-issue parts and a specially designed system to meet BATF muster, the SA1 is as home as any semi-automatic pistol, chambered for 7.62x51mm ammunition and weighs 23 kilograms.
A brief run in the 1980s was around 200, so owning one of these beautiful Pigs today would be like owning a vintage 1967 Corvette, a pre-74 Porsche 911 or a Jaguar E-Type Landing.
Prior to 1986, the manufacture of firearms sufficient for sale to civilians was completely legal, subject to the provisions of the National Firearms Act (NFA) and included a $200 transfer tax. Hence, such weapons are abundant and cheap. In some cases, the price of cheap subguns can be less than the transfer tax.
Although it shares many features and parts with the M60 machine gun, the Springfield SA1 is an automatic weapon that fires from a closed grenade.

At the time, there was a thriving niche market in newly manufactured, portable machine guns. People didn't have disposable income like they have today, and this conspired to keep the market from collapsing. In addition, since these guns are still available for free, there is no unnecessary pressure to get them. In short, it's a very different world.
In 1974, a well-known military auctioneer named Robert Reese and his son Dennis Reese decided to get into firearms. Along with Dennis' brothers Dave and Tom, the Reese family hails from the Springfield Armory of Geneseo, Illinois. What has become a modern weapon was born from the foundation of a small town.
We believe that the big names in the gun industry started with paneled boardrooms and big factories. Dave Reese told me that in the early days, Springfield Armory board meetings were held around the dinner table.
The Springfield Armory catalog was small at the time. The M1A version of the US Army's semi-automatic M14, M1 Garand and M1911 rifles ran the gamut. As Springfield Armory grew, Dave Reese established his own separate company within a few years of Springfield's beginnings. The company, Rock Island Armory, manufactured and sold portable machine guns.

Prior to 1986, Dave Reese's Rock Island Armory had stocked M60 automatic GPMGs, M14 rifles, M2 carbines, BM 59 rifles, and M2 .50 caliber machine guns. The expected $200 transfer fee would drop to about $500 today, but not many are shipping the rare metal. Because of this the business is going slowly. Life was good until the expiration of the Gun Owners Protection Act (FOPA) on May 19, 1986.
A report by the Senate committee that studies the Second Amendment and the US Constitution says that the vast majority of gun control cases are against ordinary citizens with no criminal intent and those who commit crimes undefined rule. FOPA should help address these and many other issues for America's gun owners.
As the debate over FOPA neared its conclusion, New Jersey Representative William J. Hughes introduced the infamous Hughes Amendment by a false voice vote. The Hughes Amendment made the manufacture of fully automatic weapons illegal for sale to civilians, restricting the sale of machine guns to the registry.

It is generally accepted that the speaker of the system ignored the request for a recorded vote to allow the amendment to pass, despite his lack of approval. Both houses of Congress passed FOPA and the President signed it into law. This event marked the beginning of a seismic shift in the small world of American guns.

However, when the clock struck midnight on May 19, 1986, the era of the newly manufactured machine gun for civilian use in America came to an unequivocal end.

So, with the stroke of a pen, Uncle Sam put Dave Reese in a position with expensive M60 kits and no receivers to build them and sell them to the common man. Things don't seem right.
So what is the solution? What would he do with these tools if he had no way to sell them? With the help of his brothers Denny and Tom, and an accomplished Class II shooter named Doug Offinger, he began modifying the M60 system into an automatic fire. A former John Deere engineer named Bob Kuhl also helped. Robert Reese meets Bob at a gun show and they hit it off. Working on a shoestring budget, the gun developed over time, and the end result is undeniable.
The fully automatic GI M60 fires from the open bolt using a floating pin, and the adjustable bolt is locked during firing. This is not a pattern that lends itself easily to a massage pattern like you would find on an AR-pattern SAINT or M1A. So Dave Reese & Co. chose a striker instead.

For such a rare piece of metal, the exact price is whatever the market will bear. However, in contrast, at the time I wrote this article, an original null Rock Island Armory fully loaded M60 was listed on GunBroker.com for $70k. Wow.

Dave is still an active part of the Springfield Armory organization today, working to provide all of us with modern defensive weapons. The story of the Springfield Armory is a perfect embodiment of the classic American dream. A family of entrepreneurs took what they loved and turned it into a successful empire.
